The volume of wood chips for drying should be as large as technically possible to reduce costs. Art

In recent years it has built up a significant industry to supply district high cube heating which is largely based on the incineration of waste and to some extent, on electricity, bioenergy and fossil fuels.
The goal is to replace petroleum fuels used in industry and construction including wood chips, wood pellets or wood. For small and medium fuel plant for district heating have chips dried before burning.
Previous studies of drying with cold air indicates that the drying time is often long and the cost of artificially drying represents a significant proportion of total costs.
The study took place in Viksdalen in Gaular municipality, Sogn og Fjordane and Kleive in the municipality of Molde, Møre og Romsdal. Drying of wood chips were made in close proximity to two smaller power stations in late September and throughout October 2009.
- It was possible to dry a container of about 28 løskubikkmeter with tile in under 3 days. The humidity dropped from 52 percent to 7 percent, and heating value increased from 15,315 kWh to 24,013 kWh. Consumption high cube of electricity to the fan was 270 kWh, or 1.1 percent of the energy in tile bandwagon, says Nordhagen.
The volume of wood chips for drying should be as large as technically possible to reduce costs. Artificially dried chips can in turn be mixed with moist wood chips to even out the moisture.
- By producing dry chips increases the energy content or heating value in the delivery, and this in turn increases the fuel value in cents / kWh. Autumn seems to be a season in which the production of woodchips is possible by using waste heat from electric power plants, says Nordhagen.
To achieve the objectives of increased high cube use of wood products and increased production of bioenergy, it is necessary that it invests in fixed and that different actors are driving forces to establish chains of exploitation and production of renewable resources.
- Existing oil boilers that burn fuel must be replaced with modern bio-boilers that burn wood chips. This will also greenhouse gas emissions, says Eric Nordhagen.

The current support scheme for extraction of forestry products for bioenergy give wrong signals to forest high cube owners, and results in much higher high cube administrative costs than necessary, write researchers from UMB / Norwegian Centre for Bioenergy research in this feature article.
